The Wonder of Wolves: Intergenerational Wolf Discovery II 2011

Partnerships

The Wonder of Wolves: Intergenerational Wolf Discovery is a partnership program with Vermilion Community College's Road Scholar program (also known as Elderhostel or Exploritas).

Description

Grandparents and grandchildren unite! Learn and play together with this unique intergenerational wolf adventure offered in partnership with Exploritas. Learn about wolf behavior by observing our resident pack, howling to a wild pack, and tracking wolves using radio telemetry just like the wolf biologists!

Registration Deadline

Registrations must be received before July 1, 2011 to ensure lodging accommodations.

8:30 a.m. International Wolf Center Visit - visit the Center, explore exhibits, observe resident
wolves and take in some programs
11:00 a.m. Pup 101 presentation at the Center: meet our newest ambassador wolves!
12:00 p.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. Orienteering - Great family activity. Learn how to use a compass to go through an
orientation course in the northwoods!
4:00 p.m. Free time
5:30 p.m. Supper
6:30 p.m. Introduction to Evening Program
7:00 p.m. Evening Program

Tuesday, July 19

7:30 a.m. Breakfast
8:30 a.m. North Woods Ecology Program - Learn more about the ecology of our region during
this program and hike.
12:00 p.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. Beavers and Wolves Field Trip - Travel to a local beaver lodge while we learn about
the dynamic relationship between wolves and one of their prey - the beaver!
4:00 p.m. Free Time
5:30 p.m. Dinner
6:30 p.m. Craft Time: Family wolf focused crafts
7:30 p.m. Wolf Folklore: Examine the ways the wolf is portrayed in lore from around the world.

Wednesday, July 20

7:30 a.m. Breakfast
8:30 a.m. Grandparents: Wolf Management Program: Learn what all the controversy
surrounding the wolf is about. Grandchildren: Wolf Activities: While the grandparents are
busy, the children will be busy with wolf focused activities.
12:00 p.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. Wolf Research Introduction: Learn the history of wolf research in the area
2:15 p.m. Wolf Research Field Trip: Travel throughout wolf country while looking for a radio
collared wolf! Just like the researchers do!
3:45 p.m. Wolf Research Mapping: Great family activity. Follow the wolf pack's movements -
this activity will make the data come alive!
5:30 p.m. Supper
7:00 p.m. Predator & Prey Program: Learn about the hunting and feeding behaviors of wolves
8:00 p.m. Evening Program

Thursday, July 21

7:30 a.m. Breakfast
8:30 a.m. Interpretive Hike with bag lunch provided: Separate hiking groups for
Grandchildren and Grandparents. We will eat at the same location together. The children will
play games during the hike and the grandparents will learn trees, flowers and more along the
way. Rugged up and downhill hike covering 3 miles roundtrip.
1:00 p.m. Free Time
5:30 p.m. Supper
6:30 p.m. Travel to the International Wolf Center for an evening of wolf watching featuring the
Center's own film "Highlights of the Ambassador Wolves."

Friday, July 22

What to Bring

Program activities will be held indoors as well as outdoors. Minnesota temperatures can vary, and it is best to prepare for the extremes. The average high for Ely in July is 80° and average low of 52°. Plan for sudden changes in temperature as well as occasional rainstorms. A windproof outer layer will block heat-robbing wind and keep you warm on windy days. Bug repellent is suggested.
